Endpoint protection engine won't update

Most clients are ok, have a number of clients that won't update the endpoint protection engine

When I run report 'Management 5 - deployments that target a computer', choose the appropriate deployment, choose the missing update and state ' update not required' then the computer that doesn't have the update installed is shown.

In sccm console Properties, deployments for the machine I see KB304956 as Install

And yet the old version of system center endpoint protection is shown in add/remove programs.

updatesdeployment.log says EnumerateUpdates for action (UpdateActionInstall) - Total actionable updates = 0

What can have gone wrong here? - the console and client agree that there is nothing to install and yet the wrong endpoint engine is installed.

I've done multiple Software Updates scan cycles and the machine regularly updates the endpoint protection definitions as shown in updatesdeployment.log.  I've also tried deinstalling and then reinstalling the client.

The only thing that is odd is that the endpoint protection client version is not showing in the sccm console (shows blank entry), and also blank entries for endpoint protection remediation information
